Important Cities

Yucatán was conquered in the 15th century by the Spanish. As such there are many colonial cities and places that have endured the test of time. These are worth paying a visit if you happen to be in Yucatán.

Mérida
Known as “La ciudad blanca” (The White City). It is the capital city of Yucatan. It is a city with a unique blend of cosmopolitan character and its origins. It is located in the north-western part of Yucatan which is bordered on the east by the state of Quintana Roo, the state of Campeche to the west, the Gulf of Mexico to the north and the state of Chiapas to the south. The city is full of extraordinary colonial buildings, cathedrals and churches, it is practically irresistible to walk the main streets so that we can admire and visit them. Paseo Montejo (Montejo Avenue) is the main and most beautiful avenue.

Izamal
It is known as the city of three cultures because here you can find pre-Hispanic, colonial, and modern buildings. This town is a colonial jewel with cobbled-stone streets and colonial-style lamps. It is located 72 miles to the east of the city of Mérida. Its clean, quiet, safe, and picturesque streets make your stay a pleasant one.

Valladolid
Now is known as " La Capital del Oriente Maya" (The Capital of the Mayan West); this title is deserved not only for the architectural beauty of its ancient colonial buildings, but also for its strategic location in the centre of all the eastern part, being the most cosmopolitan city in the region; the ideal place to stay and see the wonders of the Mayan world. It is located 160 kilometres from Merida and 40 kilometres from one of the 7 Wonders of the World, Chichén Itzá. It has colonial buildings, such as the Convent of San Bernardino de Siena, El Palacio Municipal (The city Hall), the Church of San Servacio, el Ex Telar de la Aurora (the former Aurora loom), and the Museum of San Roque.
